“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
I’ve been out seeing new places and people for as long as I can remember. It’s the beauty that drives me to go look for more of it.

“[There] is the assumption of a dichotomy between human beings and the world: a person is merely in the world, not with the world or with others; the individual is spectator, not re-creator.”
-Paolo Friere
Guiding, as teaching, is a means to collaborate with all parties to engage in the subject, with the surroundings – be part of it. From hiking through Anasazi ruins on multi-day class II-III trips in S. Utah, to the mossy rivers of Oregon, to the majesty and whitewater of the Grand Canyon, to the terraced fields above the Yangtze, rivers have brought me to the best places on earth. I have been fortunate to share these places with people who’ve only dreamed of such experiences. With our clients, I get to re-live the newness everyday.
Photographer
“While there is perhaps a province in which the photograph can tell us nothing more than what we see with our own eyes, there is another in which it proves to us how little our eyes permit us to see.”
-Dorothea Lange
I photograph because it simultaneously allows me to ask a question and see deeper and with more breadth than my eyes ever will. Picking up a camera when continually confronted with such beauty is often the natural path for many outdoor professionals.

“You see things, and you say: ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were, and I say ‘Why not?’”
Just as the natural environment has such a large power to transform our lives, even more so does the environment and objects that fill our lives when we aren’t ‘exploring’. When people really take time to think, or really just let themselves listen to the problem, the design solution is not only beautiful but empowering and a positive addition to the world. This is why I design.
Uncle
“No matter what you’ve done for yourself or for humanity, if you can’t look back on having given love and attention to your own family, what have you really accomplished?”
-Elbert Hubbard
From my sisters, Anthea and Alex, I have four (!) nieces now. They are all so precious and beautiful and full of energy; I am going to have so much fun watching them grow up. This section is really about much more than me and my nieces, but about family and the next generations and the love that flows continuously through the generations. Yay!
